When done properly, exterior painting not only adds fiscal value to your home and instant curb appeal; it's also crucial in protecting your home. However, there are many factors to consider with both the products and processes to ensure you reap all the benefits of protection, and of course, the beautiful finish you're after. It's important to choose an experienced exterior painting contractor to paint your homes' exterior to be sure the home is properly protected. A knowledgeable residential exterior painting company will take the time to physically meet at your home to get eyes on the property and get answers to all potential questions. Not all home surfaces involve the same process: wood homes, vinyl-sided homes, aluminum, brick and composite all require different products and processes to provide you with protection and beauty for years to come. Regardless of your homes' surface finish, cleaning is a mandatory step, albeit a different method for every surface. Wood tends to swell and hold water, and is particularly susceptible to fiber damage with too strong of a pressure washer. Ordinarily, pressure washing is not our method for cleaning and prepping wood, as it would be for vinyl or aluminum. Wood homes also are susceptible to tannin-bleed (a process where the oils from the wood are pulled to the surface, particularly noticeable when paint dries on the surface). To avoid this, proper scraping and oil priming of the surface is essential, where vinyl or aluminum may only require a water-based primer. Vinyl siding is particularly tricky. All vinyl is rated for a certain UV resistance level. In order to properly paint vinyl siding without the risk of bubbling or warping, using a vinyl-safe formula is vital, regardless of which color you choose. For wooden homes, spraying and backbrushing is perfectly acceptable in providing a quality finish that will properly bond to the surface. Conversely, spraying and back-brushing vinyl or aluminum will permanently change the appearance of your siding, giving an unsightly finished product. Spraying aluminum (after the chalk has been properly removed) with airless sprayers and fine-finish guard attachments will prevent "surface spits", brush strokes, and drips, making airless spraying a great way to provide your aluminum or vinyl with a result that doesn't change the appearance of its glassy-smooth finish.
